Private candidates: how to sit Matric or Inter without a school

Updated 28 October 2026

Short answer

A private candidate sits a board exam without being enrolled through a school or college. You apply to the board directly, on its own admission form and within its stated window, and the board sends your roll number slip. Who is eligible, which groups are allowed and the charges are set by each board in its notice.

Who sits as a private candidate

  • Students who studied at home or at an academy not registered with the board.
  • Students re-appearing in failed papers after leaving school.
  • Students improving marks after passing.
  • Adults completing Matric or Inter later in life.

How to apply

Admission forms come from the board, not from agents. Boards publish an admission schedule before each exam, often with an online form on their own site. You usually need your B-Form or CNIC, photographs, earlier certificates and any documents the notice lists. Keep the receipt.

Limits to know about

Boards may limit private candidates in some ways, for example in science groups that need practical work, or in who may sit the first part as a private candidate. Some boards also ask private candidates to sit an exam centre near their address. These rules differ, so read your board's admission notice.

Which board?

A private candidate usually applies to the board that covers the area where they live, or where they last studied. If you are re-appearing, it is normally the board that holds your earlier result. Check the board's notice or ask its helpline.

Results and documents

Private candidates check results the same way as everyone else: by roll number on the board's site or in the gazette. The result card and certificate come from the board directly, since there is no school to pass them on.
