Matric, Inter, SSC, HSSC, DMC, gazette: board exam terms explained

Updated 28 October 2026

Short answer

Matric is the Secondary School Certificate (SSC), covering Class 9 and Class 10. Inter is the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC), covering Class 11 and Class 12. Below is a plain list of the other words you meet on board notices, result cards and roll number slips.

Classes and certificates

Boards use several names for the same exams. A notice may say "SSC", another "Matric", and a third "10th class". They mean the same stage.

Matric / SSC
Secondary School Certificate. Class 9 (Part I) and Class 10 (Part II).
Inter / HSSC
Higher Secondary School Certificate. Class 11 (Part I, "first year") and Class 12 (Part II, "second year").
9th, 10th, 11th, 12th
The class numbers. Many boards announce Part I and Part II results separately.
FSc, ICS, ICom, FA
Inter groups: science (Pre-Medical or Pre-Engineering), computer science, commerce, and arts/humanities.

Exam sessions

Most boards hold one main exam a year and a second, smaller one later. The names differ by board, so read the title on the notice carefully.

Annual (1st Annual, Annual-I)
The main exam that most regular students sit.
Supplementary (2nd Annual, Annual-II)
A later exam for students who failed a paper, missed the annual, or want to improve marks.
Date sheet
The board's timetable of papers: subject, day and session.
Roll number slip
The admit card for the exam. It shows the roll number, centre and subjects. Keep it safe; you need the roll number for the result.

Result documents

The online result comes first. Paper documents follow later, through your school or the board.

Gazette
The full result list the board publishes, often as a PDF, by roll number or by institution.
Result card / DMC
Detailed Marks Certificate: your marks or grades in each subject. Some boards call it a marks sheet.
Certificate
The formal pass certificate for the whole stage, issued by the board after the final part.
Position holders
Top students the board names when it announces a result. Not every board or session announces them.

Candidates and after the result

These words come up when you apply for the next exam or question a result. The rules for each are set by your own board.

Regular candidate
A student who sits the exam through a school or college.
Private candidate
A student who applies to the board directly, without a school or college.
Improvement (of marks or division)
Sitting a paper again after passing, to try for better marks. Boards limit when and how often.
Rechecking
Asking the board to look at your answer book again. Usually this checks the counting, not a fresh marking.

Who coordinates the boards

Each board runs its own exams. The Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC), formerly the Inter Boards Committee of Chairmen, coordinates the boards nationally and issues equivalence certificates up to HSSC level.

Questions

Is Matric the same as SSC?

Yes. Matric is the everyday name for the Secondary School Certificate (Class 9 and 10).

Is Inter the same as HSSC or FSc?

Inter and HSSC are the same stage (Class 11 and 12). FSc is one group within it, the science group.

What is a DMC?

A Detailed Marks Certificate: the board's record of your marks or grades in each subject.

What is the 2nd Annual exam?

Another name for the supplementary exam, held after the main annual exam. Some boards call it Annual-II.

What does "gazette" mean for a result?

The board's full published list of results, usually a PDF. Schools often use it to see all their students at once.
